‘Tanais’ museum reserve is the largest museum of antiquity in Russia. Its 3000 ha territory hosts the ensemble of the monuments of history and culture of different ages and nations from the Paleolithic age up to the 10th century. It was founded on the basis of diggings made in Tanais, the north-eastern outpost of Ancient Greece, dated to the 3rd century BC. One theory is that it was destroyed by a fire, another is that it was ruined and looted by the Goths. The settlement, the necropolis and other areas explored by the archaeologists, make an open air exhibition. The most fascinating findings – ceramics, coins, jewelry, amphorae and glassware – are demonstrated in the indoor historic exhibition.
