Aksay settlement was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1570. It used to be situated near the frontier and was constantly raided by the Turks, the Tatars and the Nogais, but its convenient location on the crossroad leading to Starocherkasskaya kept bringing people here. The main road to the Caucasus laid through Aksay and stanitsa was also a place of crossing the Don. Aksay’s post office was visited by the greatest Russian writers A. Pushkin, M. Lermontov and L. Tolstoy. Stanitsa’s outskirts were home to the fortress with customs. Fortress’ underground mazes, arched ceilings and exhibited old weapons are able to enchant every tourist.

Aksay Military Museum is located in the middle of Mukhin Creek. Its exhibition consists of collection of the XX century military weaponry and the main ground reception bunker of the Southern Federal District. Two-storeyed bunker with its ramified corridor system, large number of rooms and halls was left by the military in the mid-1990s. Now it is a perfect place for mass events as paintball tournaments, children games etc.

XIX century post office museum complex consists of 4 buildings, which include an inn and the post office master’s house. They were built in the early XIX century and belonged to the famous Cossack family, the Mukhins and the lieutenant-colonel Lotoshnikov. Located near the place where the bridge over the Don used to be, the complex exposition tells about history of post service in Aksay and the Don Region, the famous people who visited it over the years. Exhibition is rich in the original items of the travelling way of life – postcards, documents, maps, schemes and sketches, telling stories about post service, offices and tracts.

XVIII century customs museum is located in the mouth of Mukhin Creek. Its main exhibition is in the underground facilities, which were the property of the Don’s nobelty – the Leonovs and the Bobrikovs. From the museum holdings you will learn about the history of the custom service in the Don Region, and the Don’s nature and ecology. Museum complex exposition has many melee weapons and fire-arms, customs servicemen’ household items, maps and manuscripts. The guides will gladly tell you exciting legends of treasures and mysterious ghosts, which are an indispensable part of this amazing museum.
